trick or treating

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

One of the most fun things you can do at Halloween is to go trick or treating. Whether youre a youngster or parent of a youngster there are some safety tips you should keep in mind to make your Halloween trick or treating experience a happy and memorable one.

If your children from the younger set then you will probably be chaperoning them as they make the rounds of the neighborhood in search of Halloween candy. Consider that most folks who will be handing out the trick or treating goodies likely work at a 9-5 gig and therefore might not be home until a bit later in the evening. That doesnt mean you should wait until well after sundown before taking your young ones on their Halloween excursion but know whos who in your neighborhood.

You may also consider turning your kids trick or treating night into a play date. Perhaps you can organize a small gather of friends to use your house as home base. Going as a group will add to the fun of trick or treating.

A week or so before Halloween you should be able to tell which houses are going to be in the trick or treating business. Usually the folks who have taken the time to put up Halloween decorations will be the same ones who are handing out candy. Even a simple carved Jack-o-lantern placed on the porch could designate that trick or treaters are welcome.

If you start out when there is still daylight, chances are you may end up trick or treating in the dark. This means you should carry along a working flashlight to help guide the way. If you have the chance, consider adding reflective strips to trick or treat bags or plastic pumpkins. Some candy bags and costumes have reflective strips already built in.

You should also set some candy boundaries for the kids. It would be a good idea for them not to dip into their trick or treating bag until after they get home and you have a chance to inspect all the candy. This will be a tough sale. Perhaps a compromise would be to let them have a little treat from a house that you know and deem safe. Of course one of the biggest benefits with being a trick or treating candy inspector is you get first pick with the good stuff!

treatments for depression

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Treatments for Depression: Treating Solutions to Depression With Consideration

Clinical psychology classes and pamphlets about depression will tell you that treatments for depression are widely available and that they can be highly effective. Treatments for depression include medication, counseling and other kinds of therapy. Its often said that a combination of medication and therapy proves to be the best treatment.

Antidepressant drugs are prescribed to enhance the mood of people with depression. Most antidepressants work by slowing down the reuptake of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that travel through the neurons in our brains. When neurons are done sending neurotransmitters, they bring them back inside. Antidepressants keep neurotransmitters related to mood working longer so that mood increases. Its important to realize that antidepressants dont work by taking away depression. Instead, its more like they lift you up so that the symptoms can improve.

Therapy is the other option for treating depression. Most people think of Freud and psychoanalysis, and while a form of it exists today, psychoanalysis in its original form is debunked and no longer practiced. The one element of Freud that remains is that therapy tries to get into the underlying causes of your problems. A common form of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which aims to treat the distorted thinking of depression patients so that they can change behavior that perpetuates their depression. By meeting with a therapist on a regular basis, patients can conceptualize what theyre feeling and going through and learn to cope with it.

Treatments for depression do work for people, but treating depression isnt always as simple or effective as it might seem. For one thing, medication and therapy can cost a lot of money. Insurance helps decrease the cost, but the fees for your antidepressant refills accumulate especially if youre going to take them for the rest of your life, and therapy can cost up to a little over $100 per session if youre seeing a therapist at their private practice. There are also negative side effects for at least the first month while taking antidepressants, and its not guaranteed to work. Sometimes patients have to switch around to figure out which one helps them. Therapy can be effective if its consistent but patients have to find the therapist thats right for them, which can be difficult.

Another issue with treatments for depression is that treatment is contingent upon the patient seeking it for themselves. The patient is responsible for getting their prescriptions and monitoring their intake, and therapy will only work if the patient is willing to participate. The problem is that depression can debilitate you and make you not want to do these things. This is where outside support can come in. Treatments for depression dont all have to be professional. Friends and family who are supportive and understanding can do a lot for people with depression.

Its never certain whether treatments for depression will work or not because everyone is differentthey have different experiences, different problems, and different biological makeup and so on. Everyone has to pick the treatment thats right for them, but figuring out which treatments for depression will work for you can be a challenge.

travel insurance

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Everyone has a hankering at one point or another to travel abroad. Seeing other parts of the world is a great and unparalleled experience. When I first went to Italy, someone told me to get international travel insurance. Only a student at the time (a young, foolish student at that), I declined. Luckily, nothing happened. But now that I’m a little older and wiser, I’ve discovered that international travel insurance is not the scam or money drain it appears to be.

The best thing that international travel insurance will grant you is a little piece of mind. OK, OK, that sounds like some pretty goopy sales pitch. But keep in mind, you are traveling to a different country. When I drive to a different state, the different symbols and signs and names and places disorient me enough not to want to do it more often. And that’s in a place where they drive on the same side of the road and use the same measurement units, let alone the same language. This is all a long way of saying that being in a new and foreign country can be discomforting and alarming. Having international travel insurance makes it less so.

There are some very practical situations that having international travel insurance can help with. International travel encounters many paradoxes, for lack of a better term. Let’s say you need to find an English speaking doctor. In Portugal, it’d help to speak Portuguese. But if you spoke Portuguese, you wouldn’t need an English speaking doctor. Another example is if you lose your passport. Just go to your Emaessy, right? But you can’t get in the Embassy without a passport. International travel insurance helps fix these paradoxes and get you out of tricky situations that are much more common than you would think. And that’s not including its ability to recoup nonrefundable costs in delays and cancellations, and help with emergency medical care. Having international travel insurance is very much like having a guardian angel when you are a stranger in a strange land.

Traveling abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. Seeing France and Italy were totally the transformative and eye-opening and delightful experience everyone had told me it would be. Looking back, there were some dangerously close calls, like the ones mentioned above. Now that I understand the great benefits better, I can give you my personal opinion that in my future travels I will definitely search for the right international travel insurance package for me.

toddler angel costume

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

How to make a toddler angel costume that shows off her real personality your little angel!

The toddler stage is perhaps one of the cutest of childhood. All toddlers have built in cuteness, along with a bit of stinkerism now and then! However, on the whole, your toddler is your little angel. The toddler angel costume is one of the best choices for a little girl, embodying every parent and Grandparent’s idea of a real angel, worthy of an extra dose of goodies. Angel costumes are easy to put together, too. Let’s take a look at some of the tips and tricks of creating the successful angel costume.

When we think of angels, we usually imagine them to in white, shades of pink and touches of heavenly gold. This color scheme defies the notion that your cute little angel is anything but 100% angel, a real photo op for your family album collection.

If you sew, it’s easy enough to find an angel costume pattern. If not, or if you’re short on time, a purchased white dress, or a fuzzy pink top and white skirt will do just fine. A gold ribbon makes a fine belt. Add some white or gold lace to the hem of the dress or skirt. Check out the notions department of the fabric store for iron-on gold stars for more sparkle, or tiny satin roses to sew to the top. One thing you want to keep in mind when shopping for accessories for a toddler angel costume is that toddlers are still putting things in their mouths that look good enough to eat. So, avoid items like glitter and beads, for safety’s sake.

Pink or white tights add to the angelic look and keep that toddler warm, too. A fuzzy ‘halo’ from the drugstore costume section is another essential for the toddler angel costume. A pair of white shoes always works. Gold shoes are also really cute if you can find them.

Now, what’s missing from your complete toddler angel costume? Angel wings, of course. You can find fuzzy wings at the drugstore, near the halos. Kids this age love soft, fuzzy things. Other angel wing designs which are popular are those made of white netting rimmed with wired ribbon to hold the angel’s wing shape. Look online as well. You’ll find a much larger selection of styles and materials in wings than you might find locally.

So there you’ve got the basics of creating the cutest toddler angel costume ever. Don’t be surprised if your toddler wants to wear this costume again and again. Hey, this may be the only Halloween costume that can be Christmas wear at family gatherings!

tissue paper crafts

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Children love crafts. Adults do to some extend, but you can usually entertain most children if you find some great ideas. There are a ton of things that you can do for crafts, though the most common ones may become boring to them after a while. That means thinking up new ideas for new crafts to keep them busy and to keep their imaginations sharp. Push aside the same old coloring books, crayons, and markers, and think about some tissue paper crafts for kids that they are going to enjoy any time of the year. Best of all, most of these are very inexpensive to put together or buy.

When you get tissue for tissue paper crafts for kids, you should get each and every color you can find. Tissue paper for crafts can be found in most craft stores and is relatively cheap. That means you can buy heaps of it and you are not going to spend much. That is more crafting opportunities for your money and more different things you children will have to do. If you get all the colors you can find, you are going to have craft ideas that last throughout the year for different occasions, or for no occasions at all.

Tissue paper crafts for older children can be thing that younger children many not be able to do or even want to do. Older children may really enjoy making something that they can put in their room or that you can display in the house. If you go to a craft store, you can find items make with wood or hard cardboard-like material that you can buy. Get a good, clear glue and have the children rip the tissue paper into strips. Then, using paint brush, they can glue the strips onto the object with any colors they wish. Once it dries, cover it with a sealer for a really great work of art.

Tissue paper crafts for younger children can be just about anything. You can do crafts with just the tissue paper or you can add other items to the pile. They may have a lot of fun just gluing strips or squares of various colors of tissue paper on another piece of paper. They may want to make leaves when it is fall (using fall colors) or a wreath when it is time to celebrate Christmas. You can buy a cone and have them wad up tissue paper and glue it to the cone for a really neat Christmas tree tissue paper crafts ideas.

Tissue paper is versatile and can be used with any craft that you already do with your children. That is what is great about many craft items they can be used for anything. Crafting is often something that has no rules. Imagination is the most important ingredient. If you are having trouble coming up with tissue paper crafts on your own just give your children the opportunity and they may come up with some really great ideas on their own. You can also look online or in craft books if you want to give them something more structured to do.

tips on saving money

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Having a baby is exciting and expensive. Most that are having a second child are already aware of how much it really costs to have a baby, especially if they are starting from scratch. Those on their second or third child may have things that they can use again, but when you are having your first, you may want to think about some tips on saving money so that you do not have to spend a fortune when you are putting together your nursery and getting what you need for your baby. See where you can save and then splurge on a few things when you want to do so.

The car seat can be a very expensive things to buy when you have a baby, but is also one of the most important. You can not leave the hospital with your baby unless you have one, and you should never have baby in a car without one anyway. These can be something you save from child to child, or you could get one used. However, never buy one used from someone you do not know. Always get a seat from someone you know and only if it has never been in an accident, even a small one. If it has been, it is no good and you should not use it. This is one of the tips on saving money with a baby that should never be ignored. Unless you are sure of the history of the car seat, do not use it.

Other tips on saving money with a baby run along the same lines, but you do not have to worry as much about accidents. Most baby swings, seats, and high chairs have not been in accidents. What you do have to worry about when you get these is how old these items are and if they have been recalled for any reason. Make sure all parts are working, safe, and also that there have been no recalls that make the item dangerous for your baby. You may also want to check into a crib if someone gifts you with one, as they are probably the most recalled baby items on the market.

If someone wants to throw you a baby shower, take them up on it. You will not have to do anything but show up. Some are weird about this, as they do not like asking people to get them things. Remember that someone else is throwing the shower, not you, and that most that know and love you want to give you something to celebrate a new life. Simply going to your shower or showers is one of the best tips on saving money with a new baby. You may get many things that you need allowing you to have enough money for everything else for your baby.

Remember that you do not have to get the most expensive of everything when you are having a new baby. Your baby is not going to care how much costs. You want to make sure things are safe and do what you need them to do, but do not think you have to buy the most expensive of everything. Get what suits you. If you follow these and other tips on saving money with a new baby, you can get a few expensive things that you really want while still getting all that you need. Remember that money does not mean much to your baby, but your love will. As long as you do your best and give them all the care they need, you will be doing everything right.

thin client computing

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Before the introduction of the personal computer in 1984, the first computer systems treated monitors and keyboards as simple input/output devices, not as a computing device. A user logged in to the central computer and began a session, sending keyboard entries to the computer and receiving back computer output on the monitor. Each monitor and keyboard was a client to the central computer, although ‘client’ was not the term used to describe this keyboard/monitor combination. The central computer served all the needs of its clients.

Having no computing power, the keyboard/monitor client was software thin, that is, the unit had only the hardware and firmware necessary to communicate with the central computer, but no software at all. Thin client computing was the first type of computing available to most computer users before the mid-1980s.

In the mid-1980s, the personal computer took root in business and by the 1990s, the keyboard/monitor client was replaced by micro-computers, usually with a Windows operating system. These computers had computing power, including memory, secondary storage, and peripheral connectivity to such devices as printers, faxes, and modems. Computing power was now available to most users, and software, simple and sophisticated, became available for micro-computing in nearly every application area.

Distributed, rather than centralized data processing, became the best model, now that computer power could be distributed throughout an organization. Each department had its own server and maintained its own data. Each ran its own software. Since one part of an organization will often have need of the data or processes of another part, as is the case with businesses, the inter-connections of computers was required. This interconnection enables computers to request services from other computers. Computers making a request to another computer is in the client role, while the computer receiving and processing the request is a server.

The server would certainly have the data and processes it owned. These would be used exclusively by the department. The same would be true of the client. The client is a role. The computer that fills the role of client may be a server in its own right. It may have programs and data that are exclusively for the use of the client. Any client that has programs and data that are relevant to the organization’s information system is known as a ‘fat’ client.

The difference between fat client computing and thin client computing is the source of all processes and data. With a fat client, some of the processes and data it requires comes from itself, the client, but other processes and data may come from a server. With thin client computing, no processes or data comes from the client. All processes and data are run on, maintained by the server. In thin client computing, your calculator, spreadsheet program, and word processor are all on the server and run on the server. The server holds and maintains your data. In thin client computing, the computer reverts back to the earlier role of the keyboard/monitor client. Some servers must act as a centralized computer for the thin client. Thin client computing requires session management.

Thin client computing may become the standard in years to come, but that will be a long time yet. Most computer users prefer to keep as much computing power at their finger tips, without relying on a service. Some prefer to serve themselves. Others continue to press the notion that thin client computing in a service oriented architecture will be the only reasonable way to go. Fat and thin client computing are likely to coexist side by side for years to come.

the symptoms of fibromyalgia

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

The symptoms of fibromyalgia are highly unpleasant and unfortunately self-perpetuating. Fibromyalgia is a fairly common physical condition that has mental and emotional symptoms as well. If left untreated, the symptoms of fibromyalgia can greatly interfere with patients quality of life, leading them to experience even more pain than they already feel.

The defining symptoms of fibromyalgia are pains all over the body. The pain affects the muscles of the body but not the joints. The pain is chronic and never-ending, but it wont kill you, at least literally. Theres no scientific way to test whether someone has fibromyalgia, so a diagnosis relies on what patients say about their symptoms, and a physical examination. Fibromyalgia pain is experienced at specific points of the body known as tender points. These points are extra-sensitive in fibromyalgia patients and even pressing them softly can be very painful. There are 18 tender points in the body, and a doctor diagnoses you as having the symptoms of fibromyalgia, not just ordinary body pain, if you experience pain in at least 11 of the 18 tender points.

However, the symptoms of fibromyalgia arent limited to just body pain. Experiencing constant pain all over makes it pretty difficult to fall asleep. This means that fibromyalgia patients are constantly sleep-deprived as well as constantly sore. Even one night of bad sleep can significantly impair your functioning, so imagine what its like to experience a bad night of sleep on a regular basis. This has all sorts of bad consequences. Increased irritability, fatigue and lack of concentration are just a few of them. Then from not being exactly in the mood to move around too often, your body becomes weaker and less physically fit, which makes the bodys condition even worse. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia veer into the psychological. Chronic pain combined with lack of sleep can lead to stress and depression, and emotional disturbances can come from other peoples lack of understanding as well as the burden of suffering from fibromyalgia. The symptoms of fibromyalgia arent so easy to see from the outside. Internally, fibromyalgia patients are pained and exhausted but people cant see your aching muscles, and they might interpret your weariness as grouchiness.

Even today, no one knows what causes the symptoms of fibromyalgia, but fortunately there are treatments to relieve them. Pain relievers can obviously relieve pain, and physical therapy can help soothe the muscles. Following a healthy sleep regimen can help patients to feel more rested, and psychological treatments like counseling and emotional support can help people with fibromyalgia cope with their illness.

thanksgiving gift basket

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays of the year, a chance to get together with family and friends and truly appreciate the most important things in our lives. It’s a chance to be together, to eat great food, and to reestablish the bonds of culture and community that bring us together as a society.

It’s important to remember, though, that thanksgiving celebrations shouldn’t end when the meal is over or, if you’re in a sporting household, when the final seconds tick off the clock of whichever National Football League game you happen to be watching. A good way to make sure everyone keeps the spirit of thanksgiving going beyond the holiday celebration is to give a thanksgiving gift basket filled with food, treats and crafts that are autumn and thanksgiving specific.

One way of adding that extra touch is, instead of creating a “thanksgiving gift basket”, to create a thanksgiving cornucopia. According to Wikipedia, “In modern depictions, the cornucopia is typically a hollow, horn-shaped wicker basket typically filled with various kinds of festive fruit and vegetables. In North America, the cornucopia has come to be associated with Thanksgiving and the harvest.”

Websites such as pro-gift-baskets.com take the initiative in this, creating their own thanksgiving gift basket selection, several in the shape of a cornucopia. Their Thanksgiving Cornucopia Harvest Basket, for example, is described thusly:

The Cornucopia has always been a symbol of an abundant harvest, which makes it perfect for Thanksgiving holiday. This year let the people on your gift list know you wish them a happy Thanksgiving and prosperous year with our new Thanksgiving Cornucopia Harvest Basket. This gift comes with an ample supply of fresh apples and oranges, along with an assortment of Nunes Farms nuts all beautifully wrapped inside a wicker cornucopia basket.

Could anything be more seasonally appropriate? I don’t think so, and now that I look at it I’m pretty sure I’m going to get one for my own mother this coming Thanksgiving.

Other ideas beyond fruit and nuts is to include a cannister filled with homemade cookies, or include a symbol of the season such as a plush stuffed animal turkey or scarecrow. Anything pumpkin-themed is probably a good idea as well, as is a copy of a Thanksgiving-themed movie such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

thanksgiving costumes

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Thanksgiving isn’t generally celebrated as lavishly as its neighbors Halloween and Christmas, but it’s an important holiday in its own right that you’d be well served to use as an opportunity to teach your kids not only American history, but life’s lessons about thankfulness, humility and tolerance that can go on to serve them well for the rest of their lives.

One way to aid this goal is to search for Thanksgiving costumes and let your kids play out the parts of the Pilgrims and the American Indians who saved them that first, brutal winter in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Though there were earlier attended “thanksgivings” – the holiday itself has its roots in the harvest festivals of autumn – the concept of a specific American Thanksgiving came from the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation in 1621.

William Bradford, the first pastor of Plymouth Plantation and de facto leader of the Pilgrims, wrote in his memoir Of Plymouth Plantation:

They began now to gather in the small harvest they had, and to fit up their houses and dwellings against winter, being all well recovered in health and strength and had all things in good plenty. For as some were thus employed in affairs abroad, others were exercised in fishing, about cod and bass and other fish, of which they took good store, of which every family had their portion. All the summer there was no want; and now began to come in store of fowl, as winter approached, of which this place did abound when they came first (but afterward decreased by degrees). And besides waterfowl there was great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many, besides venison, etc. Besides, they had about a peck a meal a week to a person, or now since harvest, Indian corn to the proportion. Which made many afterwards write so largely of their plenty here to their friends in England, which were not feigned but true reports.

So there’s your first idea for thanksgiving costumes – one could be William Bradford, the pastor of the Pilgrims, and have him or her read from the book about that famous winter.

Just as imporatant to the history of Thanksgiving in America is the role of Squanto, a Patuxent indian “who resided with the Wampanoag tribe, taught the Pilgrims how to catch eel and grow corn and served as an interpreter for them (Squanto had learned English as a slave in Europe and travels in England),” according to wikipedia. Thanksgiving costumes that are Squanto, or more generically American Indian themed, aren’t difficult to find online or in stores.

And, if none of that suits you, there’s always the most traditional of Thanksgiving costumes: The Silly Turkey.
