telecommuting jobs

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

As the recession continues to exert a heavy toll on many enterprises, the need to cut down on expenses seems to be the only thing left if they are to keep their doors open. One of the ways that many companies are doing this is offering remote workers telecommuting jobs. Telecommuting has been seen as the new way to cut down on salaried workers while maintaining production. Virtually, all companies in the software and service industries have seen the value and the enormous operating cost-cuts that telecommuting can provide. In fact, this trend has been picking up over the last couple of years and all signs do not show it stopping. Globalization has taken a whole new level and there are many dynamic forces that are driving this process that even governments cannot control.

With falling telecommunication costs and the expansion of the World Wide Web, telecommuting jobs have the perfect platform from where to grow and move the next wave of how jobs are done. What is referred to as globalization 3.0 is shrinking the world to a small size and flattening the playing field at the same time. Individuals and enterprises are now able to collaborate and compete globally. Thanks to software and the creation of the global fiber-optic network, all are now next-door neighbors. Outsourcing is moving once locally-available jobs to the other end of the world. Anything from tax deductions to taking reservations and arranging for bookings are some of the jobs that no longer depend on local manpower.

One of the fields where telecommuting jobs seems to have favored is in the software development. Software development does not need to be done in one place anymore. In fact, software development through what is called Agile development is aimed at offering remotely located teams access to the same software platform where teams can share ideas, their progress and any difficulties in the development cycle without necessarily being in the same room. Consider also telecommuting jobs in the field of customer care. It is no longer necessary to have customer care representatives sitting in an office doing inbound and outbound calls. With a home phone and a computer with an internet access, this can easily be done right remotely.

We are in the middle of a big technological change and living in a society that is at the heart of that cutting edge change is hard to predict where all this will lead to. One thing is certain though; telecommuting jobs are here to stay.

technical support services

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Technical support services is an essential and critical service most businesses require in this age of computer based organizations and businesses. Most medium sized businesses have an information technology department, usually a second level sub-organization of the business, with a vice-president of IT directly answerable to the president. This department is typically sub-divided into a development unit, an operations unit, and technical support services.

The development unit is responsible for the development of software and computer systems for the organization, and will include programmers, testers, analysts, implementors, technical writers, even system purchasers. Database designers are also commonly included in this unit. The operations unit is concerned with the day to day operations of the systems installed by development, such as data base managers, system managers, network managers, and operators. The technical support services unit is primarily concerned with supporting the users of your information system, not the technology, including the installation of systems, the training of personnel in system usage, troubleshooting, the writing of user manuals, and help desk support.

Technical support services interfaces the information system to the users of that system. The unit is typically headed by someone who has an in-depth understanding of the organization’s business goals, objectives and processes, an engineer’s grasp of information systems technology, and, of paramount importance, an understanding of the human factors, such as people, personalities, motivations and management. The technical support services director or manager is required to interface with business processing, engineering, and personnel groups. This technical support services leader will be primarily concerned with assuring that the organization has access to the information system and that the information system is achieving the service levels expected by its customers, as well as the organization itself.

Technical support services normally consists of units, dedicated to the installation and configuration of hardware and software. These functions are performed by technically competent individuals with knowledge and experience in computer installation, network connectivity, operating systems configuration, computer security and troubleshooting. These are the employees who install new workstations for new employees, who answer to system-down issues, irregularities in system performance, connectivity issues and load distribution. Network engineers, operating system technicians and computer repair technicians are found among this group.

Technical support personnel also have the responsibility of training users in the use of the organization’s information systems. This responsibility is shared among a diverse group of people from technical documents librarians, to trainers, to application use specialists who know the logical design of an application, how to configure applications, operate these, and communicate technical complexities in simple, layman’s language that guides the users in the effective use of applications and system hardware. They will also have a knowledge of information
system resources available to the organization, service levels assigned to various
information services, and an aptitude for instructing and teaching.

Being the primary interface between the organization’s information system and its customers, technical support staff must be readily available to the system’s customers. Call centers are run by technical support services, staffed by individuals who possess technical and application knowledge and skills, and have an ability to calm, assure and guide customers towards a successful resolution of a wide variety of issues and problems that arise when non-technical people use the throughly technical information system that is the vital infrastructure of most organizations today. Troubleshooters, teachers, problem resolution experts, the technical support services of an organization is a critical group whose performance can impact the performance of the organization, and ultimately, the bottom line. An enterprise would be unwise to do without them!

teaching gifted students

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Gifted education is a form of special education, though that truth is often forgotten in the discourse about improving instructional practices. Teaching gifted students presents its own set of challenges and difficulties.

Teachers are often encouraged to differentiate their instruction that is, to modify and alter curricula and lesson plans so that each student completes work appropriate to his needs and abilities. Yet in educational discourse, the concept of differentiation often seems focused on the education of disabled students, English Language Learners, and others who suffer from academic delays. Rarely do educators really discuss in any depth the need to modify and accommodate when teaching gifted students.

As a result, nationwide test scores demonstrate that educational outcomes are improving for the worst-off students, and the lowest performers are indeed learning more than they were before. However, at the same time, the highest performing students are seeing a drop in their test performance. In other words, the most gifted and talented students are actually faring worse than they were a few years ago, as educators focus so intently on their underperforming peers and tend to de-prioritize teaching gifted students.

In reality, gifted students need more attention than most of their peers, not less. Their special abilities need to be nurtured and developed, not neglected as they so often are. Teaching gifted students does not mean handing them a copy of War and Peace and sending them off to read, glad that theyre out of your hair for the time being. And it certainly does not mean pairing them off with the struggling students to work as personal tutors, doing half your work for you. No, teaching gifted students is a responsibility and an ethical imperative.

When planning lessons, it is crucial to keep gifted students in mind. They should not be forced to sit in a classroom hearing lessons about topics theyve already mastered. They should not be given pointless busywork when, as always, they finish their work long before the rest of the class. Think ahead about teaching gifted students in your class. What are their particular interests? If you dont know, the first step is to find out. What work do they find most challenging? Even the brightest student has a stumbling block.

When working with especially talented and gifted students, you must differentiate to their needs just as you would for a struggling student. Teaching gifted students is not easy, not if you wish to do it right. But neglecting gifted students will only create more headaches for you in the long run, as you scramble to find ways to fill up your bored students time.

sustainable living

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

The scientific evidence is overwhelmingly clear. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are at levels higher than they’ve been in millennia and they are still going up. Whether you believe the generally accepted theory that this is caused by man or not, we can all agree that everyone needs to work together to decrease carbon dioxide emissions. But this is not the only reason to shoot for sustainable living. It benefits both the world’s ecology and future, as well as your pocketbook.

What does it mean, sustainable living. Sustainable living is a broad term that encompasses any number of lifestyle choices that ultimately leads to reducing the permanent and negative impact a person, household or company has on the ecosystem. Sustainable living is self-sufficient, it reduces the usage of finite resources on the earth and instead utilizes renewable energy. As it stands, sustainable living can greatly increase the amount of savings on everyday purchases. Perhaps only pennies at a time, these savings can only increase over time, making a small investment today a potential profitable windfall tomorrow or next year.

One of the keys of sustainable living is the idea of green energy. While ideas of solar and wind energy have been around for decades (or in the case of wind, since the first industrial windmills), only in the last 5 or 10 years of the prohibitive costs been addressed in favor of greater and greater efficiency. Today, roof-lain solar panels or small rooftop wind turbines are central to sustainable living. Some are so effective at capturing this natural and renewable power source that those connected to the municipal power grid can often not just reduce their electricity bills – but eliminate them altogether. A select few are even turning a profit by selling energy harnessed by solar panels. Sustainable living won’t just save you money, it might make you some cash as well!

Other methods for sustainable living is common sense changes that will lower heating costs, such as installing double pane windows throughout, updating to a smaller and more efficient water heater, and reducing the miles driven. Supporting local farms and produce helps drive down the financial and environmental costs of shipping food around the world as does growing some of your own produce in your window sill or backyard. Taking small steps to achieve sustainable living can have long lasting and, especially in the case of food, enjoyable results for years to come. Sustainable living is probably a choice now, but down the road, the need to preserve natural resources and the planet itself will require more and more effort and perhaps a higher cost. Better to be at the lead of sustainable living today.

super mario games

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

Mario, a universal video game icon, has been around ever since Nintendo introduced him in the early 1980s, and theres always been a steady supply of new Super Mario games to play. Practically every Mario game has spawned sequel after sequel, even veering from the standard adventure-oriented Super Mario games into the sports, music and puzzle video game genres. However, Mario has always remained an adventure game character at heart and Super Mario Games have complimented every generation of Nintendo system released.

The appeal of playing Super Mario games lies in their simple-to-master yet reasonably challenging gameplay that provides them with entertainment value for years to come. Learning how to play Super Mario games is pretty easy. It doesnt take too much effort to learn how to work the controls so that you can run around and jump on things. Yet theres something about running around and jumping on said things thats so ridiculously fun and addicting.

There are many Super Mario games to play and choose from. If youre feeling old-school, try the classic Super Mario games for the NES and SNES. It might be hard to get your hands on either of those systems in this day and age, but fortunately Nintendo often makes their old games available in modern form. Skipping to a couple of years later, we have Super Mario 64 for the N64, which was quite impressive in its time. Super Mario 64 is considered one of the greatest Super Mario games to play of all time, and apparently it still is, because Nintendo adapted it for the Nintendo DS. For Gamecube and Wii weve got Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, which go beyond the simple run and jump concept, but still retain the essence of Super Mario games. Theres something about rescuing the hopelessly prone-to-abduction Princess Peach that never gets old. Its no wonder that Super Mario games have stood the test of time.

The wide availability of Super Mario games to play unfortunately also means there are many games and systems to buy. This is where it comes in handy to have friends who have all the video games you dont. If youre cheap, friendless or too lazy to leave your seat in front of the computer, there are plenty of fan-made Super Mario games to play online. However, people can get really creative when left to their own devices. Online Super Mario games might not be your cup of tea if youre not interested in insanely impossible levels, kooky graphics or just plain bizarreness in general. They do say that the best things in life are free, but they also say that you get what you pay for (or dont). But theres bound to be some decent free Super Mario fare out there as long as the Internet exists, so put those Google skills to use.

studio script

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

What does the arrival of summer mean? Outdoor activities, vacations and of course, the movie season. But have you ever wondered how movies are made. What goes into making a blockbuster movie that rakes in millions of dollars? Taking into consideration production and marketing costs which amount into millions, making a profit on a film is not as easy as it sounds. One hurdle is the unpredictable public audience. As one professor of film studies said, the expectations of the public vary and there is no way of knowing exactly what they want at any given moment. Lets take an imaginary tour of what goes around a studio script before it can be made into a blockbuster film.

In the movie business, preproduction is the groundwork of any movie and is probably the longest phase in the process. This process is the preparation stage and it begins with a story idea. A story can either be fictitious or based on real-life events. When a writer has come up with a storyline, he or she puts it down into a script. The script now becomes a screenplay and may undergo numerous revisions before it can be produced into a shooting script. The final version of the studio script will have the entire dialogue and other additional information such as the action descriptions in the movie as well as technical details guides with such things as transitions that have to be incorporated between scenes and the camera directions. While the studio script is still at this stage, it is sold to a producer.

It is now up to the producer to determine if the screenplay has potential and if he feels so, he signs up a reputable director and a famous actor or actress. The next stage is storyboarding. These are series of sketches that allow a cinematographer to know where to position the camera and it saves a lot of time during the actual shoot. Before this can be done, it will also have been determined what location to be used for filming, the interior sets to be used, costumes, lighting, makeup, sound effects and stunt work. A basic studio script can involve hundreds of people as is seen in the closing credits of the film. As one technician put it, It takes a city of people to make a feature film.

The next step is putting all that is on the script on film. The director closely supervises the filming of each scene. Even relatively simple scenes may take an entire day to film. Each attempt at a scene is called a take and for big scenes, it is not surprising to have up to 50 takes at the end of the shooting day. In all, it is easy to see why a movie can take up to months to film. The final leg is the postproduction of the studio script which includes addition of sound and visual effects. The film may be shown to a test audience which may include the directors friends and colleagues before being released to theaters. So the next time you line up outside the theater to watch your favorite upcoming movie, consider what it may have taken to piece it up together.

stroke prevention

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

According to neurologists, the brain is the most delicate organ of the body. Weighing at only 2 percent of the total weight of the body, it is responsible for every thought, sensation and movement of the human body. In order to function, it needs to have a constant supply of glucose and oxygen which is handled by an intricate web of arteries. If any part of the brain does not receive enough oxygen, these functions are impaired and may eventually cause permanent brain damage. When artery blockage occurs, we say that a person has had a stroke. In some cases, a stroke may occur when the blood vessels rupture in the brain flooding it with blood and thus causing damage to brain tissue. Before we can see how to go about stroke prevention, let us look at the effects of a stroke.

Every stroke is different and its effects can range from mild to obvious results. This is because the effects are determined by what part of the brain is affected and as a result the bodily functions that are impaired may vary. A common affliction is limb paralysis. When the left side of the brain is affected, it results in the right-sided paralysis and when the right side of the brain is affected it results in the left-side paralysis. Sometimes though a victim may retain the use of limbs, but he or she may have lost the sensation of the limbs. They usually look like novice skaters trying to keep their balance. 15 percent of stroke survivors suffer from seizures. Any of the five senses can be affected and victims may sometimes experience numbness of feet and hands and such indignities as drooling. So can one undertake stroke prevention measures?

As one doctor said about stroke prevention, the best way to deal with stroke is to attempt to prevent it. The number one factor associated with strokes is blood pressure. In order to prevent dangerous blood pressures that carry the risks of strokes, it is important to watch ones diet. A diet rich in potassium and low in salts, cholesterol and saturated fat will help keep the blood pressure in check. Regular exercise is also another prerequisite to good health. One who exercises sheds excess pounds and reduces the chances of artery blockage. Stroke prevention measures also go hand in hand with prevention of heart diseases. Also on the list is diabetes. People with diabetes run a higher risk of getting a stroke and thus the need for caution. Other preventive measures include a regular intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and grains and minimum alcohol consumption. Indeed, there is no better solution to stroke problems than a healthy, moderate lifestyle.

spongebob costume

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

How to create the perfect homemade Halloween Spongebob costume

Spongebob has become a beloved American icon. He’s irresistible, with his goofy, but lovable demeanor. Unlike other costumes for Halloween, you needn’t worry that you’ll go unrecognized! It’s easy to transform your persona into the character of Spongebob, if only for an evening. Your Spongebob costume may even earn you some extra treats! Let’s see how easy it is to be Spongebob:

Spongebob is a rectangular sort of guy, regular and irregular at the same time. A thinnish, rectangular cardboard box, which falls to a mid-knee length when placed atop your head, makes a great beginning. Mark your eye-holes, so you can see where you’re going when collecting treats. Use a can of spray primer to coat the box. Now, get out your acrylic paints and go to town!

What makes Spongebob so unique? He’s got big, blue eyes, with no eyebrows and eyelashes that give him that befuddled, surprised look. His face is a shockingly bright yellow color, sometimes plain, checker-boarded, or, with lime green randomly placed splotches. Maybe it depends on his mood. While his complexion may vary, he’s always got a big smile and a healthy looking pink tongue. Oh yes, when creating a Spongebob costume, remember, it’s all in the details! Spongebob has only two teeth, which are separated at a distance. Poor Spongebob hasn’t seen the dentist lately, but he doesn’t seem to mind. Happy and goofy as ever.

When you’re painting your Spongebob costume, you’ve got a lot of latitude on just how surprised he looks, how big his smile is and how white his teeth are although his teeth are generally sparkling white!

Once you’ve got his face going, there’s little else to be done after all, he’s mainly face! Leave a little room at the bottom of your cardboard box, to paint in his trademark white collar and red tie. Again, you’ve got artistic license with the tie go for a bow tie or the traditional office-style tie. Consider gluing a real tie on to your box for added flair.

Now, for the remainder of your Spongebob costume: he traditionally appears with white tights, striped or white socks and black shoes. You’ve probably got these props in your closet.

One great feature of the Spongebob costume is that it’s gender neutral. Boys can wear pants and girls can wear skirts. In any case, you’ve got a success!

Using a cardboard box as your base, there’s no such thing as a mistake. Don’t like what you see? Paint over it! Get those eyelashes, smile and goofy teeth just exactly the way you want him to look. The rest is a piece of cake, as costumes go.

The Spongebob Halloween costume is unforgettable, cute and cheap! Fill up your trick or treat basket!

snake phobia

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

The Rationality of an Irrational Snake Phobia

Phobias by definition are irrational fears. People with phobias go well out of their way to avoid whatever theyre afraid of to the point that others might find them acting ridiculously, and their ability to live a normal life is significantly impaired. One of the most common phobias is a snake phobia, which could be debilitating if you have many reptile enthusiasts in your life, though snakes are not so common that theyre unavoidable.

A fear of snakes in general isnt too unreasonable. We might automatically associate snakes with poison, but not all snakes are poisonous. Still, there are some pretty dangerous snakes out there like the Jarararcussu, which can kill 32 people with the venom in one bite. It might be a good idea to have a snake phobia so that youll want to avoid coming into contact with that one. Anyway, fear itself is biologically programmed into us. Every one of us has a sympathetic nervous system, characterized by fight or flight. Our heart rate increases, our pupils dilate, and we might feel a burst of adrenaline when we encounter something potentially harmful to us, and we do something to prevent that harm. Lots of times this involves running away or avoiding the fearful thing in the first place.

Is it possible that a snake phobia is somewhat programmed into us as well? In a study, lab monkeys who were never exposed to snakes learned to be afraid of them after watching a video in which wild monkeys fearfully reacted to a snake. Next, the researchers tried to instill a fear of flowers in the monkeys by showing the same video manipulated so that there was a flower instead of the snake. However, the monkeys didnt develop the same fear they did for snakes. This suggests that there is biological preparedness for certain objects.

A snake phobia is definitely more extreme than a mere fear of snakes, but maybe people are more susceptible to developing a snake phobia because our bodies are biologically prepared to fear dangerous snakes. We dont have the exact biological makeup as monkeys do, but snakes can be a danger to both monkeys and humans. Maybe its irrational to fear every snake in existence but in any case, your safety is the most important thing and if a snake phobia functions to keep you away from dangerous snakes, then more power to it.

smoking info

Dickie's "Lucky" Picks:

It is hailed as one of the best-selling consumer products and enjoys a rapidly expanding market. Its companies boast impressive profits and prestige, but with one problem; its best customers keep dying off. Yes smoking is one of the most profitable activity and one of the most hazardous too. Smoking info has shown that over 420,000 Americans die each year of the habit. When compared to the use of illegal drugs, that is an astounding 50 times more deaths! Another amazing smoking info is that 3 million people, and obviously more, die from smoking annually. When you do the math, that is about 6 people dying every minute from smoking alone. According to the survey conducted in 45 countries, it shown that the worst is yet to come saying, If current smoking patterns persist, then by the time the young smokers of today reach middle or old age, there will be about 10 million deaths a year from tobaccoone death every three seconds.

However, statistics do not end there. More smoking info suggests that smoking will eventually kill half of all of smokers a truly terrifying thought. Since the 50s, more than 60 million people have already died from the habit. For tobacco companies this is bad for business. If 3 million die each year and many more, an unknown number, quit the habit of smoking, this means that they will need to be replaced. So what have these companies been doing to ensure that they remain in business? One of the strategies is targeted towards the liberation of women, especially in Asian lands. While smoking is an accomplished fact in the Western world, it has taken time in developing lands of Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, the tobacco companies efforts seem to be paying off. Smoking info and statistics have shown that more women are now smoking in these lands and the stigma once associated with smoking is dying, if it has not already done so, in many places.

Take China statistics for example. It is estimated that more than 61 percent of all adult men smoke and women are quickly adding to that figure. In fact, by comparison, there are more smokers in China than the entire population of the United States, more than 300 million. Another smoking info is that more than 1.6 trillion cigarettes are smoked each year in China alone, about a third of what is consumed in the entire world. This figure will continue to rise in the future.
